Organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) use an emissive electroluminescent layer to emit light when an electric current is applied. Because of this, it allows for a light source to be constructed within a very thin housing. This technology is deployed in the OLF-LT Series, which, at only 3mm thick, is at half the thickness of traditional edge-lit LED back lights. OLED light sources offer high uniformity, as this is a completely surface emitting technology. It also has a lower power consumption and less heat generation when compared with traditional LED lighting. Though this technology historically has had a low lighting output, the OLF-LT Series uses a multi-layer technology to achieve brightness levels required for the machine vision industry. The OLF-LT Series, which is available in red and white, is ideally suited for applications with space constraints, found in the pharmaceutical industry and many more. The inherent flexibility of OLED technology has been used to designed curved OLED back panels deployed in the OLB-LT Series, which is available in white. The flexibility of the technology allows it to be designed in six different bending radii, ranging from 100mm to a maximum of 250mm. The series can be deployed with either an inner surface emission or an outer surface emission configuration. Like the OLF-LT Series, these curved back lights use the multi-layer technology for increased brightness. Combined with the high uniformity of the technology, the OLB-LT Series is ideal for applications such as observing work pieces on curved manufacturing lines and illuminating large circ ular work pieces from the inside.

Summary

With the combination of high uniformity and intensity in a compact design with low heat generation, OLED lighting addresses the need of machine builders for light sources that can be installed in machines with limited space. The nature of OLED technology allows it to be flexible in its design, demonstrated with the curved OLB-LT Series, allowing for a new way of illuminating work pieces moving in a curved manufacturing line or illuminating a cylindrical work piece directly and uniformly.
