What has sparked the foundation of the company?

Whilst studying, one of the founding members made it his mission to develop a robotic toy fish that could sense its underwater surroundings. Leaving his quest unfinished, he instead co-founded Toposens, a company which utilizes the robo-fish‘ underlying echolocation ultrasonic technology for a wide range of applications within the robotics and automotive industries. Our goal is to offer solutions to shortcomings of existing range-finding technology with our easily integrable and retrofittable products, which offer unprecedented and unrivalled 3D ultrasonic sensing capabilities to increase efficiency and safety in AGVs and other robots.

Which customer problem is solved by your products?

There is currently no sufficient solution to the challenges of sophisticated 3D environment perception in range-finding sensors, especially in 3D ultra-short-range for highest reliability 3D collision avoidance for robots. Our certified 3D ultrasonic sensor is the answer to this problem by reliably detecting accident-causing objects such as forklift forks and even the smallest items lying in the path of an AGV. Forklift forks are involved in a staggering amount of accidents per year, some even deadly, hence there is a valid need for advanced sensor-based safety features to prevent costly collisions and to further increase automation efficiency by minimizing false-positives.

What characterizes the company’s uniqueness?

Our biggest asset is our innovative combination of unique hardware configuration and software package, based on patented filtering and data processing of ultrasonic echo data into 3D data. This combination provides the end user with a sensor solution, which will not just accurately perceive and measure its environment in 3D including complex object detection, but also process the data obtained and feed them back to the robotic system accordingly. The Toposens, built-in 3D collision avoidance features for added machine safety make it a cost-effective, reliable and efficient solution. Besides, there are currently no other companies in the world offering a 3D ultrasonic range-finding sensor application.
