Higher Capacities

CoaXPress is a standard designed for high-speed vision requirements with…

  • Simple stream packets specifically designed to be handled by the frame grabber with no CPU load,
  • Natural lane aggregation, allowing virtually unlimited scalability,
  • No jitter and low latency triggering for high reactivity and precise control,
  • Reliable communication with CRC, redundancy and, on fiber, Forward Error Correction (FEC),
  • Data transfer stability thanks to the on-board frame buffers to cope with eventual PCI Express performance variations,
  • Data Sharing to transmit image data to multiple hosts sharing the processing load,

CoaXPress-over-Fiber is, so far, proposing an important evolution to the CoaXPress CXP-12 protocol, with longer reach (up to 150m or 40km depending on the fiber technology), high EMI immunity, lesser cable congestion and weight. Since its introduction in 2021, it has been, so far, endorsed by several companies worldwide. The first fiber implementation, like in the Euresys Coaxlink QSFP+ frame grabber, allows similar bandwidth as the copper based Coaxlink Quad CXP-12.

Coaxlink QSFP28 frame grabber

Continuing their efforts towards higher capacity that numerous industries are calling for, Euresys announce the soon coming Coaxlink QSFP28 frame grabber. A single frame grabber offering 12,500MB/sec of camera bandwidth, 2.5 times more bandwidth than the existing frame grabber. As a matter of fact, this solution will offer in a single PCI Express slot the same bandwidth as 10x CXP-12 links, or 20x CXP-6 links, or even 14x Camera Link Full frame grabbers. Similarly to other Euresys frame grabbers, the Coaxlink QSFP28 will allow communication with multiple camera configurations. From 1x 100G camera to 4x 25G cameras by means of break-out fiber cables. It also offers the same feature-rich set of digital I/O lines (#20, expandable to #40), and, like other cards of the Coaxlink family, inter-cards synchronization capabilities (C2C-Link). C2C-Link can synchronize cameras connected to multiple cards in the same PC and/or in different PCs by means of the C2C-Link adapter. The digital I/O lines can be used for camera and illumination control functions, as well as to interface quadrature decoders, optical sensors, actuators, etc.

Development, implementation & monitoring tools

Together with the frame grabber, Euresys offer the tools for seamless development, implementation and monitoring of the solution:

  • eGrabber Driver: a user-friendly object-based API, running under Windows, Linux and macOS, compatibility with GenICam. It can be programmed in C++, C# or Python and is supported by several 3rd-party software such as LabView, Matlab, Designer from Cognex, or Halcon by MVTec.
  • DMA transfer to GPU memory.
  • eGrabber Studio: an image acquisition tool,
  • eGrabber Recorder: a high performance video recording library
  • Memento: a non-intrusive logging tool for debugging and profiling the system.

Beyond the industries already using the CoaXPress-over-Fiber technology for its cable reach (e.g. sports imaging), its EMI immunity (e.g. heavy industries) and its low cable congestion (e.g. robotics, avionics), the targeted applications for this speed enhancement are all production inspection facilities where productivity and quality have to increase simultaneously, calling for faster, higher resolution visual inspection. In close communication with the many camera makers endorsing this technology also embarking on this journey towards higher performance, Euresys plans to propose the first boards early 2025.
